Genetic improvement for disease resistance in oysters: a review ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Garcia, Celine; Allen, Standish K., Jr..
Oyster species suffer from numerous disease outbreaks, often causing high mortality. Because the environment cannot be controlled, genetic improvement for disease resistance to pathogens is an attractive option to reduce their impact on oyster production. We review the literature on selective breeding programs for disease resistance in oyster species, and the impact of triploidy on such resistance. Significant response to selection to improve disease resistance was observed in all studies after two to four generations of selection for Haplosporidium nelsoni and Roseovarius crassostrea in Crassostrea virginica, OsHV-1 in Crassostrea gigas, and Martelia sydneyi in Saccostrea glomerata. Clearly, resistance in these cases was heritable, but most of the studies...

Genetic linkage map of Phaseolus vulgaris and identification of QTLs responsible for resistance to Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli Trop. Plant Pathol.
Santos,Amaury S.; Bressan-Smith,Ricardo E.; Pereira,Messias G.; Rodrigues,Rosana; Ferreira,Claudia F..
Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivars with a high degree of resistance to Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap) are not available in Brazil. Despite many studies, a low degree of resistance to Xap continues to exist due to its complex genetic inheritance, which is not well known. The objectives of this research were to complement a common bean genetic map based on the cross between a susceptible genotype 'HAB-52' and a resistant genotype 'BAC-6', and to map and analyze genomic regions (quantitative trait loci – QTLs) related to Xap resistance. Eleven linkage groups were determined using 143 RAPD markers, covering 1,234.5 cM of the genome. This map was used to detect QTLs associated with Xap resistance on leaves and pods. The averages of disease...

Grouping sunflower genotypes for yield, oil content, and reaction to Alternaria leaf spot using GGE biplot PAB
Leite,Regina Maria Villas Bôas de Campos; Oliveira,Maria Cristina Neves de.
Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the suitability of the multivariate method of principal component analysis (PCA) using the GGE biplot software for grouping sunflower genotypes for their reaction to Alternaria leaf spot disease (Alternariaster helianthi), and for their yield and oil content. Sixty-nine genotypes were evaluated for disease severity in the field, at the R3 growth stage, in seven growing seasons, in Londrina, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, using a diagrammatic scale developed for this disease. Yield and oil content were also evaluated. Data were standardized using the software Statistica, and GGE biplot was used for PCA and graphical display of data. The first two principal components explained 77.9% of the total...

Heterosis and combining ability in bell pepper lines with resistance to multiple pathogens Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Nogueira,Danilo Gustavo; Carvalho,Regis de Castro; Maluf,Wilson Roberto; Nogueira,Douglas Willian; Ticona-Benavente,César Augusto.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to develop bell pepper hybrids with resistance to multiple pathogens and make inferences in regard to components of heterosis in hybrids obtained from lines presumed to be resistant to Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV), Phytophthora capsici, or Meloidogyne incognita. The studies were carried out in a greenhouse. We used ten lines, thirty experimental hybrids, and seven controls (Konan-R, Magali-R, Martha-R, Stephany, Mallorca, Magnata Super, and Criollo de Morelos-334). For all experiments, a randomized block design was used with three replications (with plots composed of 16 plants). For evaluation of the reactions to P. capsici and to PepYMV, the percentages of asymptomatic plants were considered. For evaluation of...

Identification of Phaeoisariopsis griseola pathotypes from five States in Brazil Trop. Plant Pathol.
SARTORATO,ALOISIO.
Due to the increased importance of angular leaf spot of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) in Brazil, monitoring the pathogenic variability of its causal agent (Phaeoisariopsis griseola) is the best strategy for a breeding program aimed at developing resistant genotypes. Fifty one isolates of P. griseola collected in five Brazilian States were tested on a set of 12 international differential cultivars in the greenhouse. When inoculated plants showed symptoms but no sporulation was observed, they were transferred to a moist chamber for approximately 20-24 h. After this period of time, if no sporulation was observed, the plants were considered resistant; otherwise, they were considered susceptible. From the fifty-one tested isolates, seven different pathotypes...

Identification of rapd marker linked to blast resistance gene in a somaclone of rice cultivar Araguaia Trop. Plant Pathol.
ARAÚJO,LEILA G.; PRABHU,ANNE S.; FILIPPI,MARTA C..
The gene Pi-ar confers resistance to Pyricularia grisea race IB-45 in a somaclone derived from immature panicles of the susceptible rice (Oryza sativa) cultivar Araguaia. RAPD technique was used to identify molecular markers linked to this gene utilizing bulked segregant analysis. Initially, the two parental DNAs from the resistant donor SC09 and 'Araguaia' were analyzed using random primers. Of the 240 primers tested, 203 produced amplification products. The two parental DNAs along with the resistant and susceptible bulks of F2 population were screened using 48 primers that differentiated resistant and susceptible parents. Even though eight primers differentiated the resistant bulk from the susceptible bulk, as well as somaclone SC09 and 'Araguaia', only...

Pereira,Mônica Juliani Zavaglia; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa.
Aiming to obtain information concerning the genetic control of the resistance of the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli, six crosses involving three resistant lines (Carioca MG, Esal 583 and Esal 566) and four susceptible to the fungus (Carioca, CNFC 10443, Uirapuru and Esal 522) were developed. The parental lines, the controls (Carioca MG and Carioca) and the F1, F2 and F3 generations were evaluated for reaction to Fusarium. For inoculation, root cuttings were immersed in a spore suspension. The evaluations were performed at 21 days after inoculation, by scale of notes ranging from 1.0, to 9.0 and genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated. The heritability in the narrow sense ranged from 0.34 to 0.42 and...

Is horizontal transmission of the Ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 in Crassostrea gigas affected by unselected or selected survival status in adults to juveniles? ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Guyader, Tanguy; Tourbiez, Delphine; Pepin, Jean-francois.
Massive mortality outbreaks, mostly affecting spat Crassostrea gigas, have been reported in France since 2008. Disease investigations revealed that most of the mortality events are related to the detection of the Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1 μVar). Meanwhile, selection to improve the survival in juvenile C. gigas has been successfully implemented in this context and selected oysters were found disease-resistant to OsHV-1 infection. This paper reports the first investigation of the horizontal transmission of the disease throughout cohabitation trials within batch and between batches using unselected and selected oysters for their higher survival. Two batches, unselected (AC) and selected (AR), were produced in February 2009 and deployed in the field in...
